The Mitten by Jan Brett
Nicki’s grandmother knit him the snow-white mittens he really wanted despite her concern they could easily get lost in the snow. When he loses one of the mittens while playing outside, he gets it back in the most adorable (and hysterical) way.

LJR’s Thoughts on The Mitten
You may want to read this delightful picture book just during winter but it’s absolutely wonderful for all ages. It may even be a book you want to keep in your personal library so you can be sure to have it every year.
Considerations
In our usual LJR fashion, we try to find anything that Christian families may want to know about ahead of time to address, skip, or dig deeper into. Take a look at what we found below. Our take on Discipleship Opportunities is at the bottom of the review.
- Negative Influences: If we had to be picky about anything, it would only be that Nicki did not listen to his grandmother’s wisdom when she recommended not having snow-white mittens.
Discipleship Opportunities for The Mitten
- Referring back to the consideration above, this may be a good time to discuss Proverbs 12:15, which says, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise.”
- The whole story is about animals finding warmth and comfort from the snow and cold weather. Matthew 6 and other passages talk about how God is our provider and provides comfort. Check out 2 Corinthians 1:3 specifically.
